As of the 2013-2014 school year, student growth will account for 50% of teachers’ evaluations.  These evaluations are currently being piloted in approximately 30 schools.  Music teachers and other teachers who do not teach a grade or subject measured by state-wide tests will have 50% of their evaluations based on district-selected assessments that are approved by the New Mexico Public Education Department.  Members of the New Mexico Music Educators Association are trying to get permission to develop state-approved music educator assessments so that music teachers will be evaluated on students’ achievement in music rather than other subjects.
