Utah

Utah is going to use Teacher created Student Learning Outcome/Objectives (SLOs) to show student growth as a percentage of the teacher evaluation.  There will be 3 components to the system: Teacher Instruction evaluations, student growth as measured by end of year tests (for those subjects that are tested) and SLOs for those subjects that are not, and surveys of constituents.  There has not been a “percentage” assigned to each of these areas yet.  They want to pilot first and then see what seems most appropriate.

Music educators will be measured on students’ mastery of music rather than other subjects.  Specialists at the state and local level are writing and compiling some “exemplar” examples of SLOs for the various subjects, but the final product will be created by the teachers themselves.  Teachers will have to go through an approval process, so there will be some accountability.
