SUMMARY:Move It or Lose It: Joyful Movement Activities That Foster Classroom Community
DESCRIPTION:Movement is a powerful and engaging way to bring music concepts to life in the classroom. This webinar explores how simple movement activities can be used to quickly engage elementary students while reinforcing important musical skills. Participants will learn practical strategies for incorporating movement into the beginning of class to help students internalize musical elements such as tempo\, rhythm\, and dynamics. \nDesigned especially for elementary general music teachers\, this session demonstrates how movement-based learning supports active participation and helps students physically experience music. In addition to strengthening musical understanding\, these activities encourage collaboration through partner and group work\, helping to build a strong sense of classroom community. \nAttendees will leave with a collection of quick\, easy-to-implement movement activities that require little to no preparation and can be used as engaging warm-ups or transitions. These strategies are especially helpful for teachers looking to increase student focus\, energy\, and participation at the start of a lesson. \nApril Mattson is an elementary music teacher at Bloomingdale Elementary School near Savannah\, Georgia\, where she has taught for 17 years. She holds a Master of Music Education from Georgia College & State University and has completed Orff Level I teacher certification. April is passionate about creating joyful\, engaging music experiences that help students develop musical understanding through active participation and movement. In 2026\, she presented at the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) Conference\, sharing practical strategies for engaging young musicians in the classroom. One of her greatest joys as a teacher is watching her students grow musically and personally as they progress from Pre-K through 5th grade. \n\nNAfME presents this live virtual event at no charge to all as a service to the music education profession. To register\, you must enter your NAfME member information or create a nonmember account. After registering\, check your email for instructions. SUMMARY:2026 Wisconsin State Music Conference
DESCRIPTION:New research in neuroscience is powerfully underscoring something that music teachers have known for many years: music deeply affects the minds and hearts of musicians. More than just pleasant pastime\, casual entertainment\, or community-building activity (although it can be all of these)\, music actually shapes the way we think and feel and process our human experience. It is a lens to understand the world. This is actually evolutionary. Prominent researchers Daniel Levitin\, Nina Kraus\, and Anita Collins have shown the ways we are hard-wired from birth to make sense of the world through sound\, and music in particular. Leveraging this bold new research is already having an impact on studies in language acquisition\, literacy\, and success in school\, especially in early childhood education. Anita Collins’ famous TED video–with over 12 million views–shows how music is like a full-body workout for the brain\, impacting cognitive function\, memory skills\, focus and attention. \nBut music does so much more for the mind than this. As a language of its own\, with its own patterns and structures\, and cultural and historical context\, music is a way to enhance critical thinking skills\, “expert noticing”\, analysis and interpretive skills\, and the kinds of cognitive work spelled out in the Common Core Standards\, and made more specific in the National Co Arts Standards. \nWisconsin’s great gift to music education–the CMP Model (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance)–has for fifty years shown how being intentional about all parts students’ musical experience\, beyond just the skills of playing or singing\, enhances their experience and enlarges their cognitive capacity. The Knowledge Outcome focused specifically on this aspect of understanding music and being able to think\, talk\, and write about it. But the true innovation of the CMP Model was the Affective Outcome\, creating an intention goal for students to understand and explore the connections between a piece of music\, their own mind and emotions\, and other people\, whether their own community or those from distant places or eras. Social emotional learning (SEL) is built into music education\, but the Affective Outcome made it tangible and drawn powerfully from the music being studied (as opposed to an “extra” social/emotional idea taught in the abstract). Resilience\, problem solving\, risk-taking\, patience in practicing slow repetition\, delayed gratification\, and even managing frustration—these are among the many social-emotional skills that music education provides. And even the physiological benefits of making music with others has a powerful effect on the mind and spirit. One small example: research now show that singers in a group\, like a choir\, “sync up” their brain waves in the act of making music together\, releasing beneficial endorphins and oxytocin\, and building empathy. \nBy advocating for music education\, we affirm its vital role in shaping social-emotional identities and enhancing cognitive growth\, equipping all students—regardless of their abilities—with the tools they need for personal and interpersonal success.

SUMMARY:More Than a Rehearsal: A Music Teacher’s Guide to Acing Observations
DESCRIPTION:What does a strong music lesson look like through an administrator’s eyes? In this dynamic session\, Kamil Cooper and Principal Troy Cato bridge the gap between rehearsal-based instruction and formal teacher evaluations. Using the ADEPT model as a framework\, they will guide music educators through designing and delivering lessons that meet (and exceed) observation expectations—without abandoning the core of what makes music classrooms special. Learn how to structure your teaching\, highlight student learning\, and document progress in ways that resonate with administrators. Whether you teach band\, choir\, or general music\, you’ll leave with ready-to-use tools and strategies to turn your everyday rehearsals into high-impact\, observation-ready instruction. \nKamil Cooper is the Director of Bands and Fine Arts Chair at Lakewood High School in Sumter\, South Carolina. Previously he served as Assistant Director of Bands at Johnson C. Smith University\, where he had earned a bachelor’s degree. He went on to earn a master’s degree and a doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of the Southwest. His doctoral dissertation explored the comparative participation rates in performing arts versus athletics in South Carolina schools. Under his guidance as Director of Visual and Performing Arts at Florence School District 4\, the district received more than $130\,000 in grants\, and the school district’s band program expanded from 12 to 45 students. \nTroy Cato currently serves as the Principal of Hillcrest Middle School in Sumter\, South Carolina. A graduate of Benedict College\, he served as Director of Bands at Sumter High School\, Wilson High School\, and Manning High School. Under his direction\, ensembles consistently earned Superior ratings and were recognized with numerous Outstanding Performance Awards. His students were frequently placed in Region and All-State Bands and actively participated in professional music organizations. At Lakewood\, Troy plays a key role in the school’s academic progress\, contributing to rising graduation rates and improved testing outcomes\, along with leading the efforts in teacher observations and evaluations\, using ADEPT 4.0. His unique perspective as a former band director and current administrator informs his commitment to excellence in education at every level. \n\nNAfME presents this live virtual event at no charge to all as a service to the music education profession. DESCRIPTION:Fix your timpani issues without calling a technician\, if you even have one available! Designed with middle and high school band directors in mind\, this webinar equips you with the skills to identify and fix common timpani problems. You’ll lightly explore the mechanics of timpani to get a sense of how they work and then dive into troubleshooting techniques to resolve frequently seen headaches such as pedals that won’t stay in place\, malfunctioning tuning gauges\, and mystery rattles or squeaks that you just can’t nail down. As a bonus\, you’ll also learn how to clear heads to reduce those pesky overtones. By the end of this session\, you will be equipped with a literal and figurative toolbox of fixes. When you have an issue in the middle of a rehearsal\, you can walk over to your toolbox\, grab the right tool\, fix the issue\, and get back to rehearsal\, proving once again that not all superheroes wear capes. \nRich Bono is a former band director and owner of Bono Percussion\, which has been specializing in percussion instrument repair for schools since 2015.
