Those awards given in band are sanctioned by certain organizations. The Sousa award is given through the Selmer Corporation, and I think some of the others are too. I think using Segovia for an award is completely appropriate, but there are so many great guitarists to choose from…how about the Charlie Christian award for a youngster drawn to jazz, or a Doc Watson Award for a folk/flatpicking student? My own personal favorite would be to give one in memory of Paco de Lucia. I can’t think of an award given around the country…. Should we think about establishing a national award? That would be terrific!
