I agree with Bridget – start with what the objectives of the class are what you expect them to accomplish with the class. As to the tech, there are a couple of different approaches. I have seen teachers (usually extracurricular) have everyone put their phone in a box during the class, the teacher of course makes sure the the box is secure to avoid any possible thefts. Another idea is to try to incorporate it – if they are researching, have them use their phones – if they are drumming, maybe they can find a free drum app, etc. There are also a plethora of youtube video lessons for guitar, it just might take a little time to hunt one that is appropriate for their level. IF you are going to have them work individually, maybe you guide them to set their own goals and then have an “exit ticket” each class where they tell you quickly what they accomplished toward the goal or write it down.
