What about research projects about certain eras of music? The students could work in groups or singles (as you choose) and you could have a list of eras for them to choose from. i.e. 1920s jazz, 70s disco, 80s rap, 90s (what was in the 90s?? haha) or you could even go WAY back to renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, etc. Have them research and present showing examples and notable musicians. Then also maybe even come up with their own performance in the style (live or video). WIth well dictated guidelines, your sub shouldn’t need to have musical knowledge and might learn a thing or two in the process! Plus, between research, practicing, and presentations, it could easily eat up 4-5 weeks of classes.
