That is always the key thing to deal with in beginning band. I usually try to keep pushing them and giving them many words of encouragement. Also try to get the parents on your side as well by getting them to echo what you are telling the students. I know this year I have students that want to play musical chairs with their instrument selection. I just tell them that they need to stick it out on their current instrument for the year and see how it turns out and then maybe we can talk about switching instruments next school year. If you can get the parents to echo that to the kids that would help out tremendously.
