I am in a small school where the principal wants to add “orchestra” as an elective in hopes to build the music program beyond choir. We have new students who will make up this orchestra: 2 violinists, 1 cellist and 1 trumpet/cornet player. They are in 6th grade and have 2 years ensemble experience. Is this quartet feasible? I was a violinist but switched to piano in college and have never had experience with a brass instrument. Any thoughts would be welcome!
This could work with “expandable” arrangements; arrangements designed to work in all situations from duos to full ensemble. Also, try to pick up some trumpet skills. It’s not that hard. Ask colleagues for help, take some lessons, or even just learn from YouTube instruction.
