I am teaching 5th grade band and because of troubles with teaching instruments the “traditional way” I have created and am going to try teach my kids using a more Sound before Sight method. We will be reading rhythms, but as far as reading notes on the staff we will be starting that towards the end of the second quarter.

REQUEST: I am wondering if anybody has tried this before and have any suggestions that can make things go smoother.

    Rough Overview:
Use David Newell’s Rhythm reading techniques to for a solid rhythmic understanding while students get instruments and through out the year. Once students get instruments and know how to put it together and make a sound they will be composing and performing every week, without using music notation, until they have about an octave range. Towards the end of the second quarter we will be introducing the book and reading notes on the staff.
