I have a very small middle school chorus this year, and a high school intern who studies voice privately and is planning to go to school to be a choral director. Between those two things, I have the opportunity to work with the kids on solos or duets for part of each rehearsal for a chunk of time in the middle of the year. I’m an instrumentalist, and while I’ve taken a handful of voice lessons and workshops, I don’t have lots of vocal training. Does anyone have suggestions of books of folk songs or other rep that would be appropriate for 7th grade girls? If it comes with an accompaniment CD, that would be even better so that my intern and I can rotate between groups and individuals.
    Thank you!

With my beginning vocal students I will often ask them to purchase “The basics of singing”, “Foundations of Singing”, “Adventures in Singing”, or something similar. These texts are designed primarily for voice classes and contain a wide variety of literature as well as background information on vocal production. Many older editions can be purchased very reasonably at web sites like half.com.
