In this day of cross curricular integration, I have 2 questions.

    1. Do you have to do cross curricular integration with other subjects?

    2. How do you get your information about what you integrate?

Full disclosure – I am not currently required to do cross-curricular integration, however I’ve been dying to do even one such unit. Teachers are busy and such; hasn’t happened.

Don’t think too much about it!! I’m sure you’re already doing cross-curricular integration in some form. Most of my lessons touch on a little Geography (where composers lived, which country is a song from etc), language (my 2nd and 3d graders are learning Dona Nobis Pacem obviously in Latin), time period (when a song was composed, when people lived), social studies (the functions of music and instruments in different cultures, how instruments evolved in accordance with time period).

Ideally to get information about grade-level standards / objectives, one would speak to a Reading Coach or teacher in a given grade level. From there you can identify how your instruction would fit into that. Good luck!
