Developing Lead Players

At OMEA conference, I attended a seminar about developing lead players for a jazz band. However, instead of giving actual concrete advice, the clinician spent 45 minutes telling the story of how he became a professional, and took questions for 5 minutes. I’m just wondering what techniques there are for a) singling out which students have the potential to play lead (should you focus more on attitude or chops?), and b) what we can do to accelerate these students’ progress/develop them more effectively. Any advice from personal experience to methods and method books would be useful.
