I have the best group I’ve ever had – wonderful talent, great attitudes, young. The only problem is my instrumentation: 1 flute, 5 altos, 1 tenor, 1 bari, 1 trumpet, 2 trombones, 1 euphonium, 1 electric bass, 3 percussion. We’ll be doing a little jazz for Christmas, but I’d love to take them to (concert) band contest this year. Can anyone think of a contest piece that lends itself well to saxes? (I know I can rewrite horn parts or switch them to other instruments, but they really like the sax and aren’t very interested in switching).
What age level is this, and what grade music are you looking for? I don’t have specific suggestions without that information.
In general, I’d try to do a little arranging of clarinet and trumpet parts to fit your sax players. Your instrumentation is really pretty good besides the alto sax issue. You’re a little heavy on the mid/low side, so I’d try to fill in the clarinet and trumpet parts as much as possible.
Sorry – this is a high school group, capable of playing grade 2 or 3 music.
