I was wondering what end of the year award everyone gives out?
Band has the Sousa, Gilmore, Armstrong, and Herman, Orchestra, The National School Orchestra Award, and Chorus, The National School Choral Award but there is no “national” awards for guitar. To piggy back of these style of awards I started giving out the Andrés Segovia award to a top senior who shows outstanding dedication to the guitar program.
I’m looking for more ideas to honor those students that go above and beyond for the guitar program with out using “directors” awards.
Those awards given in band are sanctioned by certain organizations. The Sousa award is given through the Selmer Corporation, and I think some of the others are too. I think using Segovia for an award is completely appropriate, but there are so many great guitarists to choose from…how about the Charlie Christian award for a youngster drawn to jazz, or a Doc Watson Award for a folk/flatpicking student? My own personal favorite would be to give one in memory of Paco de Lucia. I can’t think of an award given around the country…. Should we think about establishing a national award? That would be terrific!
I created the Andres Segovia Award a few years back as well. I also have awards for those who made our All-County and All-State Guitar Ensembles.
Aside from superlatives (fun) awards I have my students vote on students who are “Most Improved” and also top in reach grade.
John’s idea of the other awards are a great idea. It would be nice if we could have an award(s) for the guitar world. Would it be possible to have these sponsored by a company, ie. D’Addario, Cordoba, etc.
D’Addario has been a very generous company when it comes to helping with recognition. I will approach them about their thoughts on this. So far everyone I have talked to about having a national award has been quite encouraging about it. If anyone has thoughts about how it should be named, chime in with suggestions! thanks so much for your post!
