Our new National Core Standards in Music are rich with guidance for deeper level thinking and engaged discussion amongst our students. Let’s share how we are using the Essential Questions at the beginning of each standard and subsequent subheadings. For instance, at the end of our 4/5 composition projects unit, we completed our final reflection with the EQ: “How did you know your composition was finished and ready for performance?” This was based on the EQ in composition about composers. Their answers revealed a higher level understanding of the composition process than I anticipated. This led to some wonderful class discussion, followed by talking with a professional composer about this topic. They discovered that at their early age, they share the same artistic struggles and joys as the professional and felt validated!
