Hello!! Our band was selected to participate in a parade in Houston, and I am in the planning stages for this trip. I was looking into some good fundraising ideas for to help pay for the trip. There are some unique challenges for our band when it comes to fundraising:
1. No car washes or food sales (District policy)
2. Cannot sale any candy on the school campus(School policy)
3. Has to be something that has a chance of being successful even with low parental support.(that is another topic)
We sell Gold Canyon candles (at the same time as cookie dough) and it does pretty well. At first I balked at the idea of selling candles, but people really do buy them. The students’ favorite part: the brochure is scratch and sniff!
The August 2008 issue of Teaching Music had an article on fundraising. Some ideas from the article that don’t involve food:
bottle and can drive
requesting donations from area merchants for contests and raffles
Guitar Hero tournament
selling flower bulbs and plants, calendars, candles, T-shirts
Also take a look at The Association of Fund-Raising Distributors & Suppliers (http://www.afrds.org/). It has a Fundraising 101 handbook.

Something that was brought to my attention that we are attempting this year is the Bleed for the Band program put on by the Red Cross. Basically your school hosts a blood drive, and if you are able to collect at least 30 successful units, the Red Cross will donate $500. There are levels that you can reach and you receive more money. I think the highest is $1,000. Best of luck.
