Dear Fellow NAfME Members: I am a composer, educator, and jazz pianist residing in Lafayette, IN, and a member of the NAfME Composition Council. I have taught music theory, composition, and jazz improvisation at the college and high-school levels for sixteen years. The last eight of those have been as Composer-in-residence and, more recently, Music Teacher at Jefferson High School in Lafayette. I’m very pleased to tell you that in addition to a full range of choral and instrumental (including piano classes) offerings, we are able to offer a four-semester music theory sequence and a three-semester electronic music sequence called Composing with Digital Tools at Jeff HS. I also serve as the chair of the Indiana Music Educators Association annual Composition Competition. I hope to hear from others out there who are teaching composition (and, if I may “stray,” music theory) in high school. Best wishes in all of your efforts.
