My school will add a high school music class next year. We already have a Music Appreciation class for which I use Glenco’s Music! Its Role and Importance in Our Lives. Administration wants to add a music history class. First of all, how do you differentiate between Music Appreciation and Music History? Then, what text would you recommend for the music history class? I assume music history would stick closer to a historical study of European music from early music through 20th century and then jazz, while music appreciation would include a wider variety of world music along with European. Text recommendations and insight into how others view the subjects would be appreciated.

Why music history only from the Western European Paradigm? If you’re not locked in I would suggest a World Music text, this will give your students a global perspective. I like the Williams Ives Book ” Music of the Peoples of the World”. Good Luck

Thanks for your suggestion! We already have a Music Appreciation class that covers music from a global perspective. The current class contains European music, but contains just as much from other world cultures. I didn’t include that detail in my original post but I was looking for a different approach so that there would not be too much repetition of content and listening examples. I’ll take a look at the book you suggested. Sounds good!
