I have students preparing for our solo and ensemble festival on drum set. They need to demonstrate the following styles: Rock/Funk, Swing and Latin (Salsa/Cuban, Samba, Bossa Nova). I am looking for listening examples to help them become more familiar with these styles. Any recommendations on who or what to listen to?

A good place to start would be with “Teaching Music through Performance in Jazz” (GIA Publications). The 3-CD Set that accompanies the book has 28 well-chosen recordings that include the styles you are searching for (and many more!) performed in arrangements that are accessible to most students.

    Recommended listening for drummers:

Art Blakey – Pensativa from his Free for All album
Max Roach – For Big Sid from his Drums Unlimited album
Dave Garibaldi – Soul Vaccination from Tower of Power (one of my faves!)

Have them learn it right. The “teaching music books” are nice but they are really intended for directors to find charts for their bands. Listening to the recordings of the masters is required if you wish to acquire the language. It’s the jazz musicians homework supplemental to practice.
