“Jitterbug!” is an award-winning play that uses dance and music from the “Great American Songbook” to help tell its story. To encourage use of the play in the high school and college classroom, free Educator Manuals and Student Questionnaires were written using the National Core Arts Standards for music (composition and ensemble strands), dance, theatre, and literature. Based on fact and legend, “Jitterbug!” is set in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance and is a wonderful way to introduce students to music from the Great American Songbook, the musicians and songwriters of the big band era, and the historical context that made it all possible.
