We would like to know!!!!
Have you started to integrate the new National Music Standards (2014) into your classroom? If so, how? Has your district been discussing the new standards? If so, what discussions are you having with your colleagues/administration? Is your state one of the states who has officially adopted the new music standards? If so, can you tell us about the adoption? If not, is your state in the process of looking at adopting the new standards? What discussions are you having with colleagues? Lawmakers? Other stakeholders?
The NAfME Council for General Music Education would love to hear from you on what you, your district, and/or your state has done with the new standards. Please tell us your story using this thread in the NAfME Forum for General Music!!!
Most Sincerely,
Bridget James

My state, CT, just recently adopted the standards, but my previous urban district adopted them immediately once they came out. We were given several workshops about the standards in which we analyzed the new standards and discussed activities which would connect to given strands. If you email me I can put you in touch with my previous supervisor who could expand on this. m.mangino@yahoo.com
My current district -another urban district 🙂 – is using the new standards to write a curriculum. This summer a bunch of us in the Music department (and members of each other academic department) are beginning this process.
I personally have gotten a lot of lesson ideas as I read through them- ways I could expand on activities I already do which would include more grade-level-appropriate analytical discussions. I think they are raising the bar for what we do and what we expect of our students.
Maria,
Thank you so much for your feedback! I will share this with the NAfME Council for General Music Education and I will also reach out to you via email for further information. Really appreciate the time you took in replying.
Would love to hear more from other General Music teachers out there on where their state/district is in adopting and/or using the new National Music Standards! Hope you are all enjoying the summer!
Respectfully,
Bridget James
