We are excited to be starting a guitar program at our school next year! We will be purchasing 15-20 Yamaha C40 guitars and cases for the class. What do you use for class guitar instrument storage at your school?

Are there other concerns I should address concerning this topic?

Since you are using cases you can lean them against a wall. There are a number of storage carts that are available

I am on a limited budget for this. Should I get cases and skip the storage cart, or should I get the storage cart and skip the cases? I think the cases would provide more protection in the long term, but a storage rack would give me needed space in my storage area.

Here’s a response from Suzanne Shull. Contact me for a diagram.
Students should be able to get guitars quickly and with a minium of hassle. Instruments may be left out in the music room if rules about the use of the instruments are clear and the room can be secured.
Pegboard takes the least space and is practical for a small room, however young students may need help taking the instruments on and off the board. Special hooks may be purchased at a store that sells guitars. Utility hooks may be adapted if guitar hooks are unavailable.
The guitar stand pictured is a home-made version of a commercial cello stand. It is made by 2 X 4’s, 1 X 4’s, and scraps. Most of the construction is done with screws and glue. A stand like this will cost about $25.00 to make and should last for many years.
Basic construction begins with a rectangular box made of 2 X 4’s. The 1 X 4 on the top is V-notched to provide resting places for the necks of the guitars. Bodies of the guitars should touch the bottom front of the frame for stability. If the stand is not on a carpeted floor a carpeted bottom should be added.

I use guitar hooks mounted on the wall, “String Swing” brand although I know there are many. We can fit 27 guitars in a relatively small space, and I can easily see if something gets damaged or if a guitar is missing…

The cheapest method I’ve seen is to use coat hanger hooks on the wall and use pipe cleaners attached through the headstock to hang them.

We took extra storage cabinet that were used for portable carts that have doors on them and took out the shelves and put in two steel rods and hung the guitars up. I can get 7 guitars in one cabinet. I have two cabinets in my room with guitars in them.

I teach guitar to 32 students at a time in a fairly small room. Our guitars are also yamaha brand as well and come with hard shell cases which will protect them. The issue I have is that I teach K-8 so I have to be moving the cases, stands and seats around a bit. If you don’t have the same issue as I, you can set things up and have students practice certain routines to keep things effective.

One nice thing about hard shell cases is they can be used for foot rests.
