    Hello Music Ed Community!

I am planning a spring concert and would like to scan a storybook into a PowerPoint to play while students are singing through the story. Do you know if this is allowed under copyright law? The concert will be live streamed online and then archived. Thank you for your help!

    Hello,
As per my understanding, if you are not profiting from the performance, then it should be covered under educational purposes as long as you are only making the one copy (scan) for the one original that you own. if you were to be charging tickets to the performance, planning on selling a recording of the performance or charging a fee for ability to view the stream, or profiting in any way from the stream, then you would have to contact the publisher for permission and fees. I am not a copyright lawyer, but I think it is a correct interpretation. If you are very concerned that you might run into a legal issue, then I would contact your school board attorney’s office.
