I just got a new job as a music director at a small private school and inherited quite a bit of equipment. In the collection were multiple boxes of reeds that look to be at least 15 years old, mostly unopened or have 1 or 2 reeds gone from the box. Most of them are Rico, La Voz (with and without Rico’s emblem on it) and a few boxes of Roy Maier and Ciccone. Not beeing a reed player myself, I was just wondering if these old reeds would still be good or if it is perhaps time to refresh my stock.
As a side note, this school’s program started in 1985 and I would not be surprised if some of these boxes even predate that.
Update: I found some Chiron Vibrator reeds (the ones with the grooves in them for “better tone”) in the mix… I’m now wondering if any of these have value as a collectible…
They should be fine, and maybe even better – definitely don’t just get rid of them.
