I have a student who is using a school alto sax. Recently, I had to open it to get something out of it, and it reeked of smoke. It’s obviously not the student’s fault that his parents are smokers, but the smell in the case is unbearable. It’s a little strange, because I swear he never opens his case up at home. I’ve never had a situation like this. Is there a way I can prevent this from getting worse? The student can’t afford his own instrument, but I wouldn’t want to give this case to another student in this condition. I’d have to get the instrument cleaned professionally, too, but I’d rather not buy a new case if possible.

    Try spraying it with Febreeze.

On a nice sunny day leave it outside wide open in the sun for the day… then Febreeze the crap out of it. I used to have to do that with my smelly field hockey goalie equipment. Also put a drier sheet in it when not in use.
