Has anyone ever done “The Pajama Game” with a reduced orchestra? If so what was used/left out and how was it?

Great Show! I haven’t done Pajama Game with reduced orchestra, but I have done a lot of other shows with reduced instrumentation in my capacity as music director for our musical theatre program. I think you will find that if you have a strong keyboard player in the pit playing out of the vocal score, everything will be covered very well and the instruments still add a lot to the texture and the groups ability to sustain energy through the long notes.

I would tend to agree…if you have the piano reduction and a good pianist, you should be able to have a good supporting sound for the students. I would also consider adding bass guitar and drums. Sometimes just having the percussive support and the bass tones make it feel like a real pit orchestra. Let us know how it works out. Chris Peterson
