I’d recommend an app to use: “The Amazing Slowdowner” or “Capo”. They can slow down a tune and not change the pitch and/or change the pitch and not the tempo and/or modify both pitch and tempo. There are more out there that do the same thing but I have used both of these and they work easily. Do you have any recommendations?

For improvisation, I really like iREAL pro.

For composition/improvisation I think Chordbot is pretty cool. You can input chord progressions, choose a style, and play along.

On iPad, I use the ForScore app for storing scans of my sheet music.

Just recently, I having been trying out NotateMe which scans a piece of music through your phone’s camera, then converts it to playable notation which can then be sent to a composition program like Sibelius, etc. It’s very cool. I’ve seen students take a photo of a passage and have their phone play it back to them as a way to understand what’s happening in a piece.

The newest app I am most excited about is called Music Prodigy. It is an assessment app that allows a student to play with a metronome and then the app instantly gives a score, produces a copy of the music with green notes for correct notes and red notes for mistakes. it also records the performance in a mp3 format. It works a lot like Smart Music if you are familiar with that except much cheaper and will work on any phone, tablet or computer and does not require a microphone. In my opinion, it has the potential of being a game changer for any serious music student. It works for all instruments, but particularly well for guitar because it also does polyphony which means classical players may use it as well.
