Hello. I teach 4th-8th grade band in a private school. Right now I have 80 kids in the band program who all pay extra to participate. There is NO budget for us to buy anything. Before I started, the band program had nothing to its name except a few beat up music stands. Since then, I have purchased some auxiliary percussion instruments (out of pocket), someone donated cymbals, and I organized a fundraiser to buy a bass drum.
It looks like we’re going to be getting about $1000 from another fundraiser (much more then anticipated!) and I really want to buy a tuba. But I have no idea where to start! I imagine we’re going to have to get one used, which is fine, as long as it works. Does anyone have suggestions for where to look for used tubas? Or what brands/models would be good for kids of this age group? Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Taylor Music in Aberdeen, South Dakota, would be an excellent place to start looking for used/rebuilt instruments. We have purchased a number of instruments through them whenever we open a new elementary campus in our district.
I personally recommend Mack Brass. They are the starting line up of the JinBao Model from Japan (or china). They copy models of excellent tubas on the market and sell them for extremely cheap. I am going to get a tuba from their website (CC Tuba) very soon and I will be getting these horns for my ensemble next year.
