What are your favorite videos to leave with subs? Any suggestions for ones with short bits, like fantasia? If I leave a movie like mary poppins, the kids don’t finish it and then they keep asking me in the future weeks, “when are we going to finish mary poppins.” I teach K-8.
    Thanks!

There’s a three-pack that I bought somewhere that has “Stomp Live,” “Stomp Out Loud,” and “Stomp Odyssey.” The good thing is that they are just vignettes so you can pretty much jump in and end anywhere. Kids love them because they are interesting and the rhythms are cool, and they appeal to all ages.

For little kids, “Jill Trinka Children’s Concert” is good. She is a good singer and instrumentalist and most of the songs have movement. Also in short segments.

Alfred Publishing has a 5 part series on instrument families- Tune Buddies. There is a booklet with key discussion points for each video, as well as the answers to the “Brain Blasts” in the videos (I used those to create a worksheet for each video). The videos are all each about 30-40 minutes long. My kids love them.

I also like the Animusic videos.

Little ones like John Fierebend’s highlights of Lomax the Hound of music. The DVD has three 25 minute adventures that students can sing and dance to with the people in the show…My 3rd grader’s still request them. ‘The Composer specials” are movies about composers with a fictionalized child in the story…all music in the sound track is by that composer-Handel’s last chance, Bizet’s Dream, Rossini’s Ghost are my favorites from the series and most appropriate for elementary.

I like some of the Reading Rainbow videos, too. They’re a bit dated, but the younger children really enjoy them.
    My favorites are:

    “Berlioz the Bear”
    “Abiyoyo”
    “Zin Zin Zin a Violin”
