Description

We seek a dynamic and collaborative educator to join our faculty as Coordinator of Music Education and Assistant Professor of Music, a full time, tenure-track position in the Department of Music at Sonoma State University.

The primary duties of the positon involve managing all aspects of the undergraduate music education program, advising undergraduate majors, teaching courses in the music education curriculum including methods and pedagogy courses, and working with the School of Education to coordinate student teacher placements and supervision. In addition, we seek a candidate with a strong background in jazz who has the ability to teach courses in jazz improvisation and pedagogy. The Music Department may assign additional teaching responsibilities according to the department’s needs and the abilities and interests of the candidate.

The Coordinator of Music Education is expected to be active in the field by establishing and maintaining relationships with Bay Area school music programs, and through involvement and leadership in state and national music education organizations. The Coordinator will serve as the advisor for the SSU Music Education Club, our NAfME Collegiate chapter.

In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in academic advising and departmental recruiting efforts; assist the department with program assessment; complete administrative and/or committee work; and serve on campus-wide committees.

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have a PhD or DMA in Music Education. We are most interested in driven and passionate candidates who possess the philosophy that music is a vital necessity and the ability to communicate such passion in a creative and energizing approach. We seek a candidate with outstanding musicianship skills, substantial relevant experience at the university level, and a proven track record of public school teaching at the elementary/secondary levels. The successful candidate will be able to deliver curriculum that prepares music education students to teach music in a variety of traditional and emerging settings.

To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas:

- teaching effectiveness

- scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development

- service to the University

Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that "the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.
