Johanna Siebert

Johanna J. Siebert was Director of the Arts for the Webster Central School District in western New York; there she supervised approximately 60 teachers in the music and visual art departments. She received a B.S. in Music Theory from Nazareth College, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Music Education from the Eastman School of Music, and the School District Administration certificate (SDA) from the University of Rochester.

Johanna was accountable for multiple administrative responsibilities in her district that included curriculum workshops; supervision and evaluation of the arts faculty; recruitment and hiring of teaching staff; college liaison responsibilities for student teacher placements; and oversight of department budgets. She has taught kindergarten through eighth grade general music and chorus in urban and suburban school districts, mentored interns in the Rochester City School District, and continues to teach and lecture at the Eastman School of Music, Nazareth College, and University of the Arts.

Johanna’s professional expertise led to her selection on the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) music team, chairing the Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2 subcommittee and collaborating on that level’s Model Cornerstone Assessments. She was chair for the New York State Revision of the Learning Standards in the Arts (Music), and has worked with various school districts on aligning curricula to updated music standards. She is currently the project director for the NAfME’s Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources five-year grant, which creates instructional units integrating the Responding artistic process with Performing and Creating areas of the National Standards.

Johanna’s service to the profession also included editorial responsibilities for the national publications Music Educators Journal and Teaching Music; past-chair of the NAfME Council of Music Program Leaders (NCMPL); member and past-chair of the NAfME’s Music Teacher Evaluation Task Force and contributing author for both editions of its published workbooks; past vice-president of the New York State Council of Administrators in Music Education (NYSCAME); and past-president of the Rochester Area Council of Administrators in Music Education (RACAME).  Johanna presents frequently at state and national conferences on her own research as well as a wide range of professional topics.
