*Frances E. Clark earned the nickname of “Mother of MENC” both for her tireless service and for having presided at the 1907 meeting in Keokuk, Iowa at which members of the National Education Association Department of Music Education voted to form a permanent, independent music education organization, which eventually became Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and later, National Association for Music Education.
