Announcing the Winner of the Jupiter National Student Melody Competition

Congratulations to Joseph Ham of Ruston High School!

The winner of the Jupiter National Student Melody Competition is Joseph Ham from Ruston, Louisiana. Joseph is a senior percussionist at Ruston High School and has been in band since the sixth grade. There were 162 entries from more than 40 states, and Joseph’s piece, entitled “City of Joy,” was the unanimous decision by the panel of judges.

The 16-measure melody is being used as thematic material for a 5-minute, Grade 4 wind ensemble piece that Grammy-nominated composer and Artist Relations Director for Jupiter Band Instruments Rick DeJonge is composing.

The premiere of “City of Joy” will be performed by the Martin Luther King Magnet School Wind Ensemble on Tuesday, October 27th as part of the concerts during the NAfME National In-Service Conference at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Delta Ballroom A.
