National Association for Music Education Awards Shannon Kelly Kane Scholarships to Kelsey Zetzl of Butler University and
Hannah Combs of Oakland University
RESTON, VA (July 21, 2022) – The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) honored Kelsey Zetzl of Butler University and Hannah Combs of Oakland University as the recipients of the 2022 Shannon Kelly Kane Scholarship. Kelsey and Hannah were presented the scholarships during the June 2022 virtual awards ceremony during the NAfME National Assembly. The Shannon Kelly Kane Scholarship was created by Shannon’s family and friends in coordination with NAfME to honor her exemplary life and her love of teaching music. The scholarship award is open to current NAfME Collegiate members, who have been nominated for NAfME Collegiate Professional Achievement Recognition.
“Servant-leadership is a key aspect of being an effective music educator, and seeing that quality among preservice music educators like Kelsey Zetzl and Hannah Combs is heartening—we know their students will be in good hands,” Scott R. Sheehan, NAfME President and Board Chair stated. “I join with the NAfME National Executive Board and the family of Shannon Kelly Kane in celebrating the accomplishments of these future music educators and encourage them to continue to make music education available for all students they encounter during their careers.”

Kelsey Zetzl has served in many roles during her time as an active member of the Butler University NAfME Collegiate Chapter in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 2020, Kelsey began her term as the chapter’s President. During Kelsey’s leadership term, the chapter hosted several social activities throughout the summer of 2020 to keep students socially connected and engaged. In addition to social events, Kelsey coordinated professional development sessions for students. “In addition to being an exemplar student and early-career educator, Kelsey epitomizes what it means to be a servant-leader and remains steadfastly focused on providing for the welfare of our students and the state of music education,” shared Butler University NAfME Collegiate Chapter President 2021–22 Lauryn Tooley, Dean Lisa Brooks, and Chapter Advisor Becky Marsh in their recommendation letter.
Hannah Combs is the President of the Oakland University (OU) NAfME Collegiate Chapter in Rochester, Michigan. In this role, Hannah has organized and facilitated multiple professional development opportunities for member of the OU NAfME chapter. Hannah presented at the Michigan Music Conference and served as the Michigan Social Media State Chair. “Hannah Combs is powerful force of change and progress in music education,” shared Pamela L. Klena, OU Assistant Professor of Music. “She will represent the core values of NAfME as she graduates and joins our profession as a colleague.”
