Collegiate NewsLink – November 2012

Now that the elections are over, it is time for music educators, music students, parents, and friends of music education to let the new members of Congress know how vital music education is for students and for our society.  When we share the positive stories of how music education has enriched and shaped the lives of all it has touched, we share the importance of our work.

Between December 1st and January 31st, NAfME is collecting stories about the accomplishments and effects of music programs over the years and around the country.   These stories can tell of the influence of gifted music educators in and out of the music classroom,  how discipline is developed through preparation for performances and competitions, the joy of teamwork as ensembles reach shared goals, to community service through music performance —anything that shows the value of musical engagement and learning.  In February and March, NAfME will be working with state and national music education leaders to share these stories with incoming congressional members.   How many stories will we collect?  Submit your story today by going to http://advocacy.nafme.org/share-your-story.

Collegiate Chapter of Excellence Entries Due December 17

The NAfME Collegiate Chapter of Excellence program was developed to recognize chapters for their successful Music Programs, Professional Development Projects, Recruitment Techniques, and Service Projects. This recognition is conferred annually and is based on the significant efforts made by the chapter to develop the NAfME Collegiate membership program at its institution between January 1 and the Chapter of Excellence entry deadline of December 17, 2012.

Chapters submit a description and a Chapter of Excellence Application for each chapter activity to be considered. Activities completed between January 1 and the Chapter of Excellence deadline of December 17 are eligible for Chapter of Excellence Recognition. A committee made up of sitting NAfME Collegiate National and Divisional chairs will select the Chapter of Excellence entries to be recognized.  Applications are located here.

Categories:

Music Program (A musical performance organized and/or presented by the chapter)

Professional Development (A project organized and/or presented by the chapter to further the professional development of its members)

Recruitment Technique (Successful technique to recruit students to join the chapter)

Service (A project organized and/or presented by the chapter to benefit school or community music programs or activities.)

Selection Criteria:

Chapter Participation, Commitment, Creativity, Impact, Organization, Uniqueness, and Visibility

Three chapter  activities will be selected for recognition in each of the four categories (twelve total). Each selected activity will receive a plaque from NAfME and will be recognized in an issue of Teaching Music or Music Educators Journal. Additionally, the selection committee has the option to bestow up to three Chapter of Excellence honorable mention certificates for exceptional activities not selected.

You’re one of the lucky ones.  You’re training  for a career in music education so that you can share the benefits of music with future generations of learners.

Music learning should be a part of the education of every young person, not just the privileged few. Give a Note Foundation has a goal of raising $1 million to help spread the joy of music study to underfunded and underserved areas of the United States. Each year from 2013 to 2016, we’re asking every NAfME Collegiate chapter to raise at least $200 toward this goal.

Help us share the wealth that music education brings to those whose lives it touches. The Give a Note Foundation Fundraising Toolkit, found online at http://giveanote.nafme.org/toolkit/ can help your NAfME Collegiate chapter get things rolling. All elements in the toolkit are downloadable and printable.
