The NAfME Council of Music Program Leaders presents its fourth Colloquium of 2024.

Are you ready to lead your team from start to finish in creating a strategic arts plan? Facilitation of the plan, advocating for plan implementation, and communicating about the plan are crucial elements of the process. Lance Nielsen and Michael Stone will share a facilitation approach to get your Team to the finish line. Bring your questions and ideas!

Michael D. Stone (left) earned the B.A. in Music Education/Performance and a M. Ed. from University of California, Los Angeles. Mr. Stone serves as the Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator for the Bakersfield City School District. Under his leadership, Bakersfield City School District has been named a Best Communities for Music Education Award Winner by the National Association of Music Merchants for the past nine years. The District’s Music In Our Schools Week instrumental music recruitment program and Choir Standards Festival have both been recognized as Golden Bell Award recipients by the California School Boards Association in recent years. In October of 2015, Mr. Stone was recognized by the Arts Council of Kern as its Outstanding Arts Educator at its Accomplishments Awards Gala. In 2016, Mr. Stone authored a blog post entitled “Mentoring New Music Educators for Lifelong Success in the Profession” for the National Association for Music Education, or NAfME. Mr. Stone is a Past President of CMEA, CBDA, CMEA Central Section, Kern County Music Educators Association.

Dr. Lance Nielsen (right) is a retired music educator and arts administrator with 32 years of experience in public and higher education. During his career, he served as Supervisor of Music for Lincoln Public Schools, Associate Professor of Music at Doane University, and taught instrumental music at all levels of elementary through high school. He received a Bachelor of Science in Education, Master of Music, and Doctorate of Philosophy in Music with an emphasis in Music Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has served as NMEA President, NAfME North Central Division President, Chair of the Professional Development Committee, and on the Music Program Leaders Council. He is now the Executive Director for the Nebraskans for the Arts, a nonprofit advocacy arts organization
