In this session we will cover basics of bass playing such as playing position, developing different styles of bow hold, tone production, left hand setup, basic exercises, how to develop fingerings and scales to get your bass players thinking across the fingerboard. There will also be opportunities to answer questions related to teaching bass in the school setting.
Joe Dyvig is the orchestra teacher at Olympia High School in Washington State, as well as the district coordinator and conducts the Tacoma Junior Youth Symphony of the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association. He is currently President-Elect of the Northwest Division of NAfME. For 20 years Joe taught bass pedagogy at the Birch Bay String Teachers’ Workshop. He is an active freelancer around the Northwest region, including membership in the Tacoma Symphony bass section. Undergraduate bass studies at the University of Washington were with Barry Lieberman, while graduate work was at the University of North Texas with Jeff Bradetich.
