RESTON, VA (June 19, 2014)—On June 27, the National Association for Music Education will lead the single largest gathering of music education advocates to Capitol Hill. During the Association’s annual NAfME Hill Day in Washington, D.C., the advocates will share an important message: Music not only impacts academic achievement, it also shapes the way our students understand themselves and the world around them. NAfME’s new highly successful music advocacy initiative – broader minded™ urges educating the whole student.
More than 150 music education leaders and supporters from every state in the United States and Europe will share with elected officials the urgent need to ensure the continued preservation of school-based music programs across America. The event also will feature advocacy training, and an award ceremony, including the awarding of the ‘Stand 4 Music’ Award to fun.’s Andrew Dost. fun. won 2013 GRAMMYs for best new artist, and Song of the Year, “We are Young.”
This year, for the first time, NAfME has added a special Collegiate Advocacy Summit to Hill Day. It is aimed at educating prospective young music educators on today’s most pressing policy issues, and helping them to engage with advancing the cause from the outset of their careers. NAfME Hill Day 2014 is poised to be the Association’s best attended, most impactful advocacy event, yet!
NAfME’s ‘Stand 4 Music’ Award is its most prestigious music education advocacy honor. Bestowed only upon select, appropriate recipients through the course of NAfME’s 100+ year history, the award recognizes personal commitment to the promotion of the music education cause, both through engagement with policymakers and outreach to potential music education supporters.
Michigan native and former band student Andrew Dost is a laudable example of the life-changing impact that a high quality music education experience can have on a young person. Through his success with the world renowned band fun., he will add his voice to the current national conversation on the importance of ensuring access to classroom music education programs, for all young people.
Dost, a singer and composer who plays multiple instruments, will urge support of school-based music programs during key Hill Day 2014 congressional visits on June 27. fun. won the 2013 GRAMMY for Best New Artist and Song of the Year for their hit single, “We Are Young.”
He says playing trumpet in high school was significant because he learned a great deal about music including composition, but also about “ the value of teamwork, the value of practicing and of very hard work and learning to depend on the hard work of other people as well.”
