John Eros is Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at California State University, East Bay. In addition to supervising student teachers and teaching graduate courses in music education, Dr. Eros teaches courses on general and instrumental music education, the history of rock music, and music in film. He holds a BM in Music Education from Northwestern University, where he studied trumpet with Vincent Cichowicz, an MA in the Pedagogy of Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music, and a PhD in Music Education from the University of Michigan. Dr. Eros has completed certification levels in Orff, Kodály, and Music Learning Theory (Gordon).
Dr. Eros has presented at state, regional, national, and international conferences, including the national conferences for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA), as well as the Symposium on Music Teacher Education (SMTE), New Directions in Music Education, the Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium, and the Colloquium for Teachers of Instrumental Music Methods (IMTE). He has published research in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Arts Education Policy Review, and the International Journal of Music Education. Additional recent publications include book chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Qualitative Research in American Music Education, Curriculum and Assessment in Music Education, The Oxford Handbook of Preservice Music Teacher Education in the United States, and The Oxford Handbook of Music Composition Pedagogy.
Dr. Eros currently serves as the California representative for the Society of Music Teacher Education. Other professional memberships include the National Association for Music Education, the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Kappa Kappa Psi.
