Jonathan Schaller is Assistant Professor of Music Education and Graduate Program Coordinator at the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam where he teaches undergraduate music education courses in instrumental and general music and graduate music education courses in curriculum, contemporary issues, interdisciplinary approaches, and creativity. He was a music educator for eight years in the Marion Center Area School District in western Pennsylvania where he taught junior and senior high bands and instrumental lessons to grades 7-12 as well as elementary instrumental lessons and chorus to students in grades 4-6. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Master of Music in Music Education from Duquense University and Bachelor of Science in Music Education and Applied Saxophone from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Dr. Schaller’s research and scholarly interests include place-based pedagogies, rural music education, constructivism in instrumental music, popular/vernacular music, and LGBTQ issues in music education. He is published in the International Journal of Music Education, Music Educators Journal, and Journal of Popular Music Education and contributed book chapters to the Oxford Handbook of Gender and Queer Studies in Music Education and Music Education on the Verge: Stories of Pandemic Teaching and Transformative Change. He regularly presents at state and national conferences and guest conductor and clinician for school and honor bands.
