Ryan Shaw is associate professor of music education at Michigan State University’s College of Music, where he teaches Introduction to Music Education, Teaching Instrumental Music, and graduate courses in research, psychology of music education, and curriculum. Prior to joining Michigan State University, Shaw was area head of music education at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. At Capital, Shaw taught introduction and methods courses, and also coordinated all aspects of the undergraduate music education and summer masters in music education instrumental track programs. Additionally, Shaw advised Capital’s collegiate NAfME chapter and oversaw the Capital University Winds and Percussion Camp and the Complete Band Director Workshop.

Shaw received his Ph.D. in Music Education from Michigan State University and earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in music education from the University of Michigan. His scholarly interests include arts education policy and the ways that policy affects music teacher stress, planning, and instructional practices. Prior to teaching at the college level, Shaw held positions teaching middle and high school band in two Michigan communities: Berkley (Southeast Michigan) and Cedar Springs (West Michigan).

Shaw has presented research at the AERA Annual Meeting, the NAfME In-Service Conference, the NAfME Teacher Education and Research Conference, the Society for Music Teacher Education Symposium, the Midwest Clinic, the IMTE Biennial Colloquium, the Desert Skies Symposium on Research in Music Education, and the International Symposium on the Philosophy of Music Education. He has also been published in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Educational PolicyArts Education Policy Review, the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music EducationMusic Educators Journal, and Contributions to Music Education. Shaw is also active in professional organizations. He has served on the editorial board for the Journal of Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Music Educators JournalArts Education Policy Review, and Contributions to Music Education. Shaw also served as program chair for the American Educational Research Association Music Education Special Interest Group and is the current Government Relations Committee Coordinator for the Michigan Music Education Association.
