Victor Fung is Professor of Music Education, Coordinator of the Ph.D. program, and Director of the Center for Music Education Research at the University of South Florida School of Music. He teaches the subjects of social psychology, philosophy, measurement and evaluation, statistics, and global music pedagogy. He received the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Mentor Award and the High Quality Gold Online Course Design recognition at his university.
His lines of research inquiry include music and aging, Asian—primarily Chinese—philosophies in music education, and preference and pedagogy of culturally diverse musics. His books are published by Oxford University Press (A Way of Music Education: Classic Chinese Wisdoms, 2018, Chinese translation 2024; Music for Life: Music Participation and Quality of Life of Senior Citizens, 2016, Chinese translation 2021; and The Oxford Handbook of Asian Philosophies in Music Education, 2024), Cambridge University Press (Music, Senior Centers, and Quality of Life, 2023), and Routledge (Meanings of Music Participation: Scenarios from the United States, 2023). He also has numerous journal articles and book chapters. He has given over a hundred presentations across four continents, including keynotes addresses and some presentations in the fields of gerontology and ethnomusicology. He was a Fulbright researcher in Japan (2018) and has given open lectures and seminars at over thirty institutions in Brazil, China, Ireland, Japan, Turkey, and the United States.
He holds a Ph.D. in Music Education with minor areas in Ethnomusicology and Conducting from Indiana University, Bloomington. He was a Board Member for the International Society for Music Education (ISME), College Music Society (CMS), and Florida Music Education Association (FMEA). At NAfME, he was Chair of the Philosophy Special Research Interest Group and has served on the Editorial Committee of the Journal of Research in Music Education. He was a reviewer for fifteen professional journals and three book publishers. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Research in Music Education (NAfME) (2025-2030) and the International Society for the Philosophy of Music Education (2023-2027). He is the founding director of The Sparkles, a world music fusion group, that was selected to perform at the 36th World Conference of the ISME in Helsinki, Finland. His two-track album, Fung Flow, received a Bronze Medal recognition by Global Music Awards (2023) in the categories of “concept” and “creativity/originality.”
