The National Education Association has honored Jessica Fitzwater, an Oakdale Elementary School music teacher from Frederick, Maryland, as the 2014 Political Activist of the Year. Thousands of fellow NEA members voted for Jessica because of her active support of public education, including her continued push for education funding in Frederick County.
In another strong show of support for music educators, Princess Moss, an elementary school music teacher from Louisa County, Virginia, was elected to the NEA’s Executive Committee as secretary-treasurer. According to the NEA press release, she “has long championed bringing back music and fine arts education to America’s public schools.”
