NAfME Teaching with Primary Sources Curriculum Units for the 2014 Music Standards

This unit aligns with the Accomplished Level standards and assumes students have completed an equivalent of 7–8 years of study in an ensemble in addition to core or general music. It has been developed in conjunction with the Small Ensembles Intermediate unit, which can be used to scaffold instruction for varied levels of learning. The instrumentation of the small ensembles is flexible and designed to allow for any combination of musicians.

This unit is suitable for instruction in multiple delivery methods (in- person, hybrid, online). Students will learn about and interact with the concepts of underrepresentation, dominant and counter narratives, bias, and perspective. The introduction of these concepts depends on the presumption that the typical access point for learning music in class is reading Western music staff notation.
