The National Association for Music Education (NAfME)’s 2013 Concert for Music In Our Schools Month ® has a new format. Instead of a DVD for purchase, throughout March 2013, select school performances of each songs can be watched on the NAfME website.
Students perform against a mountain backdrop, at historic sites, in school auditoriums and alongside a creek.
Singers include kindergarten through high school students, and students playing guitar, percussion, and fiddle. A student-composed piece is also included “The Power of Music” composed by Sodasia Thompson, student of NAfME member Ted Scalzo of Bay Shore High School in New York.
Formerly known as The World’s Largest Concert, ® the MIOSM® concert event is also an opportunity for music educators to draw attention to their school music programs. In addition to the videos, teachers around the United States will perform the concert program in their own schools throughout the month.
The annual concert is the centerpiece of NAfME’s annual March event, Music in Our Schools Month. This month, schools and communities around the country will participate in activities and initiatives to raise awareness of the benefits of learning music and the ways music empowers and enriches lives. The year’s theme is “Music Education – Orchestrating Success.”
The 2013 MIOSM Concert program is:
“Alleluia! Jubilate!”
“Cripple Creek”
“Peace Drum Song,”
“The Star-Spangled Banner”
“The Power of Music”
“Why We Sing”
