Brian N. Weidner is Associate Professor of instrumental music education at Butler University. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from Northwestern University with additional degrees in music and education from Olivet Nazarene University, Northern Illinois University, and Illinois State University. Before coming to Butler, he was a lecturer in the music and education departments at Lake Forest (IL) College. Previously, he taught at McHenry (IL) High School, serving as district Fine Arts Coordinator, Director of Bands, and General Music Educator. He was recognized as the 2022-2023 Indiana Collegiate Music Educator of the Year by the Indiana MEA.
He has published articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Music Educators Journal, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, International Journal of Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Psychology of Music, College Music Society Symposium, and regional journals and has presented nationally and internationally. He is also the author of Brass Techniques and Pedagogy and a co-editor of the book series Points of Disruption in Music Education. He currently serves as Communications Chair for the Society for Music Teacher Education, co-facilitator of the Critical Examination of the Curriculum ASPA for SMTE, state chair for the Indiana Society for Music Teacher Education, as an Advisory Committee member for the Music Educators Journal, and as a member of the College Music Society’s Music Education Council. His research focuses on the development of independent musicianship through large music ensembles and processes of disruption in music teacher education.
At Butler University, he teaches a range of music education courses. At the undergraduate level, he has taught courses on instrumental methods, brass techniques, educational composing and arranging, music program administration, conducting, and technology. In addition to coordinating the graduate music education program, Dr. Weidner teaches graduate courses on history and philosophy of music education, music education research, curriculum design, assessment, and policy. He has also served as co-director of the Butler University Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.
