Matthew D. Schatt is an Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, where he works with pre-service instrumental music educators, student teachers, and graduate students in research and scholarship. Prior to entering higher education, Schatt taught instrumental and general music in public K–12 schools for 18 years, guiding students in grades 5–12 and helping modernize middle school general music instruction. He has also contributed to online graduate music education programs at the University of Florida and Kent State University.

Schatt’s research focuses on student motivation, resilience, autonomy-supportive teaching practices, and instructional transitions between elementary general music and beginning instrumental music settings. His scholarship has appeared in numerous journals, including Psychology of Music, International Journal of Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and Music Educators Journal.

Schatt currently serves on the editorial boards of Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, International Journal of Contemporary Education, and Psychological and Behavioral Sciences, and is a frequent guest reviewer for Psychology of Music. An Ohio native, he earned degrees from Bowling Green State University (BME), the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music (MM), and Case Western Reserve University (PhD).
