Members Choose Glenn E. Nierman as National President-Elect for 2012–2014
RESTON, VA (March 6, 2012) — The National Association for Music Education announced the results of its 2012 national and dvisional elections. NAfME members elected Glenn E. Nierman National President-Elect for 2012-2014. Nierman, Associate Director of the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) School of Music, is currently Immediate Past President of NAfME’s North Central Division. He is a Past President of the Nebraska Music Educators Association (NMEA). His public school teaching experience includes work with middle school general music and choir, as well as high school band and orchestra. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Washburn University (Kansas), and M.M. and D.M.E. degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. At University of Nebraska, he teaches graduate classes in research and curriculum development, as well as a non-major popular music guitar class.
“Perhaps at no other time in history has the rapidity of change in all areas, but particularly in communication, changed what it means to be educated,” said Nierman. “These changes have brought new opportunities for educators, but they have also brought major challenges for the music education profession, including how to advocate effectively and the recruitment and retention of teachers.
“All challenges may be viewed as opportunities, however,” he continued. “We must focus on a vision grounded in a framework of trust within all levels of the organization. Building this trust should be NAfME’s continuing primary goal for the future. Together we can make the vision of having all students receive a comprehensive, sequential music education that prepares them for lifelong involvement in music a reality!”
The results of NAfME’s division elections are as follows:
- North Central President-Elect: Lance D. Nielsen, Nebraska
- Western Division President-Elect: David C. Fullmer, Utah
- Southern Division President-Elect: Maribeth Gail Yoder-White, North Carolina

In addition, as part of NAfME’s effort to become more effective in addressing the challenges of music education, institutional changes were presented to the membership, principally designed to:
- Complete the name transition to “National Association for Music Education,” abbreviated NAfME.
- Simplify the structure for the Societies and Councils that act as focal points for select issues and groups within the Association.
The members approved changes to the NAfME Articles of Incorporation, Constitution, and Bylaws to fully implement these changes.
