Taking Capitol Hill by Storm

On June 13 MENC President and choral director Barbara L. Geer conducted 1,000 music students and their teachers in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The MENC event took place at the Capitol Hill Reflecting Pool.

Students from throughout the United States sang the national anthem in the June 13 Capitol Hill event designed to bring attention to the importance of music education.

The President’s Own” United States Marine Band traveled to Capitol Hill for a special performance.

The MENC National Executive Board attended advocacy sessions  at the Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill. Here they gather outside after the meeting.

The August 2008 issue of Teaching Music, out in late July, will include:
▪     Additional photos and stories from the event
▪     An update on The 2009 World’s Largest Concert
▪     An interview with the author of a new MENC book on teaching jazz improvisation.
