Music Teacher Profession Initiative

Overview

The Music Teacher Profession Initiative (MTPI) was formed in 2021 by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) to identify barriers to equity in music teacher recruitment, education, and retention. A task force of NAfME leaders representing institutions of higher education across the country is conducting research related to the challenges facing high school students as they make the decision to pursue a career in music education, preservice music educators in their undergraduate degree programs, and novice music educators in their first five years in the profession. A central part of the MTPI mission is to ensure all students have access to quality music educators who can meet the needs of our diverse student population. The task force will develop recommendations to identify and recruit students from various backgrounds; reform music teacher preparation admissions policies and curricula; and mentor and support new music teachers.

Join the February 15 NAfME webinar led by MTPI Task Force members: Developing and Nurturing an Inclusive Music Teaching Community.
